Alan Papert will bring XO laptops, developed by the One Laptop per Child
Foundation for children, to the Newburyport Children’s library.  Children of
any age are invited to come and try out projects and activities at 5:30 PM
on Mondays and Wednesday beginning August 10th.   The XO interface, called
Sugar, hosts dozens of learning activities which are based on the
educational ideas developed by Seymour Papert at MIT in the 70s .

While creating simple or complex designs in Turtle Art or Scratch, the
children will be discovering by doing; becoming mathematicians rather than
learning math.  The elements in the programs provide building blocks and
tools with which the children create objects step by step and end up with
fully developed projects. This gives them an appreciation of the powerful
mathematical and programming ideas which have enabled them to complete their
projects.  The Sugar environment is beautifully designed child centered
colorful creative world. There is a worldwide consortium of teachers using
the XO, and developing learning plans and curriculums with these tools.

The  XO was built for the rugged conditions in developing countries, where
there is minimal if any electricity and is tne tool that integrates
computers and learning.

Alan Papert is part of a local organization: Small Solutions. Small

information is critical to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. It is
commited to bridging the digital divide between the connected and the not-so
connected countries by creating a model for needy parts of the world.
