Hi Ev and All...
"Is there an emulator for XO-1 or XO-1.5 that runs on Linux, BSD or OS X?"
Definitely! To quote from Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_(desktop_environment) :
"Sugar is now developed under the umbrella of Sugar Labs, a nonprofit spin-off of OLPC which began operating in May 2008.[1] It is available as a LiveCD, as LiveUSB, or as a package installable through several GNU/Linux distributions."
It takes a while to set up and get used to so you may want to start early (downloading and prepping). Of course, using an XO gives the complete "user experience." Also, some Activities don't fully function in emulation. For example, Tam Tam Mini and parts of Record. Depending on where you are located, we can probably arrange the loan of an XO for testing.
There has been some discussion of having a section about using SoaS, but that will probably be saved for another manual.

P.S. To Ev... are you active in ARC in Ventura Co? Ed and I used to be on the DAT team and were ERV drivers and shelter managers! From: efbatey at gmail.com

Caryl, et al,
Is there an emulator for XO-1 or XO-1.5 that runs on Linux, BSD or OS X?
That would ease the docs testing.

Hi Folks,

Read all… surprise reward at the bottom!

Resounding response to my last email… no volunteers! None. Nada. So I'll try again. I know next weekend is a big family/church/temple holiday and feast time, but if you have any spare time, OLPC really could use your help with their "Doc Sprint." The event will actually run from Friday April 6 to Tuesday April 10. People from all over the world will converge in Boston to "hole up" for several days in the basement of OLPC headquarters and work on a much needed update of the XO Users Manual.

Each day they will work from about 9-5 (EDT) then stop for fun, games, and (probably) beer and pizza. While all these people will be cooped up in a basement (maybe even without windows?), we can all be enjoying our beautiful California spring!

But, we can still help them out! You don't really have to write anything for the manual (unless you want to). One important thing they need is help with testing the manual. Yes, it is just as important to test documentation as it is the software itself, maybe even more important.
We can use folks with access to an XO-1 or XO-1.5 to try out the various chapters and see if they make sense and are easy to follow. This is something you can also involve your children (or grandchildren, or friend's children or friends) in doing. Chapters should be available and ready for testing around 1pm (4 pm EDT) daily. You can do it anytime in the afternoon or evening… just report the results so the writers can make revisions starting around 6 am PDT (9 am EDT) the next morning. We could even get together somewhere for pizza (beer optional)… maybe Saturday or Monday evening.

If you can help, let me know… in fact, might as well let the whole list know. Maybe it will be contagious! If you need to borrow an XO to do this, you can ask Caryl, Danny, or Kenneth to arrange a check out from the SoCal lending library.

Caryl

P.S. Your reward for reading: some fun links for today… careful!…. enjoy!
