Hi Folks...
Sorry... I got this early this morning and really should have forwarded it then, but the idea just struck me that someone (or 2 or 3) of you on the olpc-socal list might be interested in applying for hardware under the OLPC Contributors Program. The application process is very simple and we will read through and decide on proposals this Friday morning.
If you are interested and can get your proposal in by tomorrow evening, it will be read by the "committee" (which can include you and, you can even vote +1 for your own proposal!). Here is the link to the proposal form: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Contributors_program/Project_proposal_form And, here is the link to general info about the program: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Contributors_program
The XO-1s and XO-1.5s are usually for projects in schools and other places where they will be used in a learning situation. You can apply for up to 10, but they will probably ask you to start with 2 or so until you have a really solid thing going. If you have already checked out some of the machines from our OLPC-SoCal lending library and know exactly what you would do with a set for your project, you may be able to start with more. It doesn't hurt to ask!
All projects need to have a blog or website about their project. You may have already seen the blog that the Contributors Program project at the FAMLI after school program at Audubon MS has. If you haven't seen it yet, here is a link: http://famliolpcsocalaudubonms.wordpress.com/
The XO-1.75s are the newest edition. They have the new ARM processor and use far less power. In fact, the hand-cranks are finally practical! If you are a developer or hardware "geek" you may want to apply for one of these so you can assist in testing. If you have been developing software or peripherals for the XO-1s and XO-1.5s you may want to test them with this new version. Here's more info: http://blog.laptop.org/2011/07/25/new-xo-1-75-contributors-program-test-our-new-prototypes/
If you are interested and would like to run your ideas by me tomorrow morning, just send me an email. We can do a Skype call. I will be home most of the day and we can schedule it at a time convenient for both of us. I will also me up this evening until about 11 pm your time.

This meeting will be Friday Aug 19th, on channel #olpc-meeting that
anybody can join right here:

Naturally supplies of {used XO-1s, new XO-1.5s, prototype XO-1.75s}
are all limited; you may not get exactly the free hardware you dream
of! But rest assured earnest, new contributors:
Everyone with something to offer to the OLPC/Sugar
global movement is strongly encouraged and mentored by our
community/peer review process wherever/whenever we
can, to Build Something Great, That Lasts. Thanks to our global
learning community standing up -- investing their
own time helping along dedicated, growing project contributions
-- arising variously from proven AND emerging AND new volunteers!
