[OLPC-Philippines] OLPC-Philippines Digest: Vision vs. Reality

Very interesting read Ray! Thanks! I agree with developing content and
offering teacher training
first. The teachers have to be on board otherwise these machines might just
get shoved
in a closet or just be viewed as a "toy".

This article along with the Nepal cautionary tale illustrates that before we
introduce the
XO and invest heavily on marketing this...that we have (as Ryan have said in
the past)
develop a good product aimed at educators first. We are challenging
traditional way of
teaching deeply rooted in social norms, politics, etc. (you are talking
about classrooms where students in some classrooms aren't even allowed to
ask questions). We need to invest heavily on teacher
training and collaboration rather than splashy marketing right off the bat.
We don't want to run into the peril of just being a
big hype! School Pilots need to give us good models to learn from.

My two cents. This was written at 2am so only a cent is left. Please bear
