Very interesting read Ray! Thanks! I agree with developing content and offering teacher training
first. The teachers have to be on board otherwise these machines might just get shoved
in a closet or just be viewed as a "toy".

This article along with the Nepal cautionary tale illustrates that before we introduce the
XO and invest heavily on marketing this...that we have (as Ryan have said in the past)
develop a good product aimed at educators first. We are challenging traditional way of
teaching deeply rooted in social norms, politics, etc. (you are talking about classrooms where students in some classrooms aren't even allowed to ask questions). We need to invest heavily on teacher
training and collaboration rather than splashy marketing right off the bat. We don't want to run into the peril of just being a
big hype! School Pilots need to give us good models to learn from.

My two cents. This was written at 2am so only a cent is left. Hi Ray,

Thank you very much for sharing the ACM article on the OLPC program.
What has been described in the article is exactly what are the
challenges we face in implementing the program in the Philippines.
Nevertheless, the article also confirms the benefits started by the
idea of Nicholas Negroponte and the superior design features of the XO.
And while the current market situation is now present with a lot of
other commercial alternatives to the XO, the target market of providing
laptops to the very poorest of school children will only be reached by
OLPC/ XO program.

I request everybody take the time to carefully read the article Ray posted (see http://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2009/6/28497-one-laptop-per-child-vision-vs-reality/fulltext).
Thanks Ray,

This is definitely a great and phenomenal read! I suggest that everyone read
this work, especially the comments/discussions resulting from it. I think
this article raises important points and questions, that we must raise
ourselves as we formulate our vision and move forward. How exactly will our
vision fare against real challenges regarding logistics, politics,
competitive PC market, and competing interests in the Philippines? It is
assumed that the introduction of learning and technological innovation will
benefit the children. But how do we make a connection or correlation between
the diffusion of XO laptops and our desired outcomes?

This article provides important lessons/perspectives that we must sincerely
take into consideration as we lead the charge in introducing such
innovations to the Philippines - so READ IT!! Haha.

What do you guys think? what about you Ray?
Hello Everybody,

Please be advised that the 2nd OLPC Get Together I have sponsored scheduled on Sunday, 28 June 2009
at 4pm to 5pm will be United Kingdom Conference Room, 7/F
Ascott Makati , Ayala
Center,
Makati City.

The room is WiFi enabled so anyone coming with a laptop can access the web for this purpose. I will check prior to the meeting whether the XO will work here. The first time we tried doing this at Starbucks Greenbelt we were unable to access the web.

The place has been made available courtesy of the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (ANZCHAM).
The author has done a great job of pointing out the problems with OLPC and
educational PCs in general.

I think the OLPC project suffered greatly from bad timing. When the project
started, getting a PC for every kind of a holy grail for schools. Many
thought that just having the PCs available would make life better for the
kinds. As the OLPC project progressed, so did attitudes and experience.
Now, at this point, everyone understands that PCs are just tools and that
one must have content to help the kids.

What's the answer? Content for the OLPC.

Given that it sounds like Negroponte is going to have an XO-2 for us all,
I'm not sure what to suggest in the short term. Does anyone have specs?

First, we'll have a refresh of the original XO with a speed bump
(CPU/Memory) as well as a storage bump (Flash storage) what will make
things more efficient in the current design before the XO-2. It will
also run Fedora 11 booting to Sugar with an option to boot to full
Gnome desktop which makes the machine more usable for real world use
(in case the kid using Sugar eventually outgrows the environment).
