[OLPC-Philippines] Xavier School Pilot

Hi Ray,

I have a suggestion for you to consider which I assume you will be more than willing to do for the group.

Consider working with John Imbong who works with Ateneo Loyola and Fr Go from Xavier who Mel Chua mentioned is aware of the OLPC program to explore the possibility of using Xavier school as another school pilot.

Whatever arrangements we will have with Xavier will have to meet the following conditions:
- funding requirements for the pilot will be fully funding by the school;
- the use of the pilot will be for using a course supplement that is consistent with the curriculum used for the subject it is intended for;
- access to information to the conduct of the school pilot.

OLPC PH will assist in the procurement of the XOs, training materials for its use and assisting in the setting-up of the pilot environment.

Please bear in mind our priority are the over 27,000 public primary schools in the country primarily those without any PC access. But this should not stop us to assist a private school like Xavier who wish to avail of the benefit of the OLPC program.

One area which you can try exploring also is whether Xavier after been successful in its pilot deployment will sponsor a similar deployment for a local public primary school. In this way, we can get leverage the success of their experience for the benefit of a public school.

Think about what I wrote and let's discuss about it further when we meet on the 28th.

Thanks.

Charles

Ooh - I didn't get to talk with Fr. Go the last time I was in Manila,
but he knows about the project.

I think Sugar would be an excellent outreach opportunity for Xavier
students - if the older children can develop, and the younger children
test, curricular materials, activities, etc. that follow Filipino DepEd
standards and can then be used in Filipino deployments with kids who
*can't* afford an awesome Xavier education, that becomes Xavier's gift
to the Philippines - think about how much goodwill and recognition MIT
got when it started the notion of Open Courseware.

Ray, is that something you might be interested in?

1. My apologies (for welcoming Ray a second time)

My apologies for not remembering Ray joined the group back in January.
I normally can recall the people in the group who regularly participate in the discussions we have. Its just my memory is slowly failing me. At the same time except for the few familiar names of people I constantly see in the discusssion sometimes I feel the current OLPC PH volunteer group do not exceed the number of my fingers. But I continue to hope the silent majority are still there actively reading ours discussions and thinking over how they can make a positive contribution to the OLPC program.

2. RSVP on Get Together

For the information of all (Ryan you may like to share the information of how many people are in this distribution list) the following people have advised me of their attendance to the Get Together on 28 June (4pm) at Starbucks Greenbelt:

- Myself
- John Imbong
- Ray Baquirin
- Hamilton Chua
- Marvin Dona

?Sandeep Chandiramani, Ryan Letada and Jerome Gotangco have given me their apologies of their absence due to previous commitments made for the same day.

I am still waiting for one more volunteer to confirm his attendance but other than that this is it.

I will see whether we can get a conference room at Ascot for our meeting and inform you on my success on getting this booking.

Thanks.

Charles

Hi, Charles,

I introduced myself to the list in this post back in January:
http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/olpc-philippines/2009-January/000414.html
and was warmly welcomed by Jerome and Naz.

I'm a faculty member in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology of Asia Pacific College, teaching the introductory programming sequence. We currently use Java for this, after trying C and C++ and a few other languages.? Before that I worked for 20 years in the industry on IBM midrange machines (= AS/400, using mostly RPG).? Along the way I got an MComp from Monash Uni, where I was introduced to Smalltalk and Scheme.

I have followed the OLPC project with interest since its inception and welcomed the chance to participate in the project once it started here.? Jerome suggested that I might do something with e-toys and Squeak, and I would love to get back into Smalltalk, even if it's been 17 years since I looked at Smalltalk code. I am also interested in developing educational materials whether in Smalltalk or Flash or other appropriate technology for teaching computer programming to children--here I'm thinking of my son who will be 11 next month.? I want him to have a solid foundation in programming (and of course I want the same thing for all the kids out there).

I should add (in response to another recent thread) that my son is in Xavier School and (as a parent) I would love for him to be using the XO and/or Sugar in his learning actvities.? If Ateneo becomes an institutional partner of OLPC I submit that Xavier School would be a good choice for a pilot project 8^).

This is getting rather long so I'll stop.

See you at the meeting (DV),

Ray

Hi Ray,

How long have you been a member? Welcome to the OLPC PH group! I am assuming you are a member and no one welcomed you yet.

Please me something about yourself, what you do at APC, what made you interested in the OLPC program and how you can help.

I look forward to meeting you at the get-together.

Thanks.

Charles

Hi, Charles,

I'm looking forward to attending the meeting (I missed the first one because of work).? The original schedule is fine with me but if you reschedule to a weekday evening I'm pretty sure I can fit that in.

Ray
