Problem solved: The "export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim" variable was in the wrong 
location. I put it in /etc/profile, which didn't work. ~.profile did not work 
either. Putting:
GTK_IM_MODULE="xim" 
in /etc/environment 
was the solution.
