I was worried too... because I love tech stuff... but AT THE SAME TIME I
am interested
in talking (deep interest) in talking about 3rd world children and families.
The reason why we need to discuss the social issues is (well... my
reasons!):
a) I live in Peru, working on computers 25 (or more) years. I have seen
previous ideas similar to OLPC (named "Huascaran"). They fail in the
long run.
b) This XO/OLPC opportunity can be revolutionary IF, and only if, survive.
c) We, the people, can make this survival happens. We have the power,
the energy, the knowledge to keep the wheels moving, even if there is
political or economical changes.
d) This is a big opportunity to help people, to train people (not us,
techies that have enough time in hands and a free spirit... I am talking
about helping a little boy in the andes to become the next great
doctor... or to help another one to GET FOOD on the table because he
learn (on the XO/OLPC/INTERNET/SchoolServer) that the he can not grow
trouts at 13,000 feet altitude and think they (the trouts) will produce
the same than in Europe or US at 3,000 feete altitud... or he/she learn
that their sheep can be saved from this or that sickness with this or
that vaccine or health measure... or he/she (the kid) help the father
telling that theres is a better price for their potatos and carrots in
this or that town... or that this or that exporter contact them to buy
they knittings... etc. etc..
e) Because, at the same time, all this kids deserver FOOD on the table,
HEALTH, OPPORTUNITIES, and ... they need to feed their souls and culture
keeping records of their songs, language, adventures, knowledge, history.
f) ... more... These kids (here in Peru were I am located, and where the
first 40,000 XOs have arrived... becoming the biggest XOs deployment in
this moment?) ... these kids deserve to know some parts of the
occidental culture... and read an american tale like Tom Sawyer (I liked
when I was 11!... but you change what "occidental" books and materials
you like when young and would like to share with andean children).
g) Because the ANDEAN culture is totally different than occidental culture.
h) Because all these andean towns are THE SAME than in year 1821: same
food, same cloth, same health, same business, same domination schemes,
same poverty, same violence, and SAME way to avoid all this: smile, and
let the "gringos" go out of town.. then they get a meeting (with no
foreigners) and then the real talking starts leaded by the men but with
key woman participation.
All this things happens in the remote villages AND, in some measure, in
the nearer towns. Further you travel... bigger problems and bigger
differences.
And.. finally... Peru has BIG jungles.. our andean peasants are "near"
to the coast (1 or 2 days by car) but the small communities in the
peruvian jungle.. most of them are so isolated that they are 2 or 3 days
in boat (following the sense of the river) (no roads, no way to walk in
the jungle, you need to move? go to the river with your canoe! just the
rivers!)... and 7 to 8 days away when you need to come back (against the
sense of the river). Those kids can not be forgotten. There are
enough XOs for all. But we need to realize that there will be need to
develop an "Internet" system that works for that enviroment (no
school..a jungle village with 100 kids with no school... well... in some
cases theres is a "school" but the teacher just come 1 day by week).
Are we going to forget those kids? Isolated they are, isolated they will
be? WE, all, have the power to help.
Ok, enough....
Jae, don't quit. Maybe ASK the administrator to open ANOTHER list:
social issues , discussion about social deployment, etc.
Regards,
Javier Rodriguez
