As a linux newbie, I keep forgetting that there is a directory that you need to use for many the commands on the wiki.  For 'hwclock' you need to use the directory prefix /sbin/.

ie. /sbin/hwclock rather than hwclock that the wiki references.  That is similar to ipconfig and other commands.  You also need to be root -- su

Perhaps someone can explain why some commands need this and others don't, but it might help with your clock connundrum!
