the answer is yes, other linux distributions can be installed if
you wish, and no, it doesn't have a CD or DVD drive.  i highly
recommend that you visit:

do some reading and searching in both places -- you'll find lots of
information from XO owners that are exploring and using their laptops
in many different ways.
