 No.  In my opinion gconf should not be used as an interprocess
 communication mechanism.  Your suggestion also won't work with activities
 that change the volume.  What's wrong with using
 snd_mixer_poll_descriptors as I suggested?  I've already proved this API
 works, and provided an example program ... all you have to do is port it
 to sugar-toolkit.git and sugar.git.
