 Yes, the default levels are set by the kernel.  Which is why the default
 levels should be changed in the kernel, not in user space, but obviously
 user space (olpc-configure) is easy.

 If you wish to persist with user space, you will have to capture samples
 from the microphone in order to create the control, but this will light
 the microphone indicator during boot, which is probably not a good idea
 for training and political reasons.
