 I'll poke around, although I'm concerned to see things like this on Ubuntu
 and Fedora, where the chosen solution was to ditch portaudio. The other
 option would be to sidestep the problem by having espeak pipe its output
 to aplay (which some people did when problems like this cropped up,
 according to the tickets). That's kind of ugly though.

 I'll do what I can to find a quick portaudio fix, but I'm not sure that's
 feasable.

 Evaluating/integrating pulse does sound worthwhile.
