originate TCP/IP connections to port 873 on a well known host.

You did not catch the nature of my difficulty -- it is that I operate my
system in *two* environments -- one which has a proxy, and one which
 doesn't.

Opera, for example, is "user-friendly". I define in its properties that
it is supposed to use a proxy. So at home it tries my proxy, finds it --
and all is well. But not at home, it tries my proxy, does not find it,
so instead it tries connecting *without* a proxy -- and all is well.

For most other services (including, I believe, olpc-update) -- if I set
them up to use a proxy, they will only work *with* a proxy, and will fail
if now operated in an environment without a proxy. That is what I meant
by not wanting to "patch my kernel" both when leaving home (to take out
proxy information) and again when coming back (to put in proxy
 information).
 ----
By the way, in order to be able to use the command-line ''olpc-update''
for over-the-network updating of builds on 8.x and earlier, I needed to
specify RSYNC_PROXY. The catch there was that I also do a lot of between-
XOs file transfers using rsync. With RSYNC_PROXY defined, such transfers
went through a double hop (XO-PROXY-XO) instead of directly !!

And of course, while it is easy to specify RSYNC_PROXY via the command
line just before I use ''olpc-update'' via the command line, to pass the
existence of a proxy to the ''software update'' that is provided in 'My
Settings', I have to go in and change "internal" system configuration
 values.
