Comment(by Quozl):

 You may find it easier to hide ''olpc-update-query'' rather than configure
 it to be idle.

 ''olpc-update'' may function through a proxy since all it does is
 originate TCP/IP connections to port 873 on a well known host. If you
 have a SOCKS proxy available to you, consider ''socksify'', ''redsocks''
 or the kernel module ''ksb''. If you can SSH out through your internet
 connection, then you can create a TCP/IP forwarding over the SSH to
 updates.laptop.org and use localhost for the server given to ''olpc-
 update''. Some HTTPS proxy servers will accept requests to proxy to other
 port numbers.

 All these are normal methods to defeat or bypass badly constructed or
 excessively restrictive network environments, so they need not be added to
 ''olpc-update''.
