 doesn't.

Oh, I caught that. But I didn't think it was worth commenting on your
difficulty, because I didn't think it would be one that many others would
 experience.

 > Opera, for example, is "user-friendly". I define in its properties that
it is supposed to use a proxy. So at home it tries my proxy, finds it --
and all is well. But not at home, it tries my proxy, does not find it,
so instead it tries connecting *without* a proxy -- and all is well.

them up to use a proxy, they will only work *with* a proxy, and will fail
if now operated in an environment without a proxy. That is what I meant
by not wanting to "patch my kernel" both when leaving home (to take out
proxy information) and again when coming back (to put in proxy
 information).

So you want ''olpc-update'' to fallback to trying without a proxy if the
nominated proxy does not work? Or to try the nominated proxy only if the
direct access fails? How will someone feel who ''wants'' a proxy to be
used yet the software tries a direct connection, or vice-versa? It sounds
 like Opera is being adaptive in response to user request to load a page;
but ''olpc-update'' is not only activated on user request. I would not
like a tool to make a network access without my implied or direct
 permission.
