 FYI,
   Also discovered that I had builds joyride.1533 and Update.1 680
 installed. Reboots were alternating between the two.

 I moved all the files out of /home/olpc and rebooted under joyride.1533
 and then under Update.1 680.
 Both times, the radio antennas were detected and showed local AP's.
 However, unable to enter WEP key successfully for my own AP.  (Worked
 before in Update.1 680, but not in joyride 1533 )

 I have saved the files deleted, if further troubleshooting / diagnostic is
 needed/desired.

 I'm going to work on a full clean re-install from USB stick, to see if
 issues go away.
