 I saw a problem like this once as well.  I didn't think about hot vs cold,
 but somehow the Touchpad entered the state you describe that usually when
 I started a trackpad motion the cursor would jump to the edge of the
 screen (lower right I believe).  In my case, however, a shutdown & restart
 fixed the problem, and I haven't seen it since.
