 the morning with the "more illumination" key.  The unexpected switching

 Thank you, mikus, that is a good clue!  I '''made the bug come back''' by
 dimming the backlight before going to bed.  In the morning, the bug was
 happening.  An interesting new observation is that pulling out or plugging
 in the power adapter plug will make the backlight switch off.

 I still do not have a simple tested recipe for reproducing the bug, but
 assume it requires dimming the backlight then leaving the XO alone for a
 while.  And we still want to discover an easy work-around, which I am sure
 exists because the bug went away for a week.
