Comment:

Okay, here is the recipe for reproducing some symptoms of this backlight
bug in joyride-2301 with Q2E12 rom:

Uncheckmark both power management options in XO Control Panel/Power. Dim
the backlight to whatever level is "too dim" for your comfort (including
totally off). Leave the XO alone for about 20 minutes, until the
"screensaver" activates (the screen goes blank and the backlight switches
off totally if it was not already off). The XO will now remember the "too
dim" setting. Next, try using the XO normally, with the backlight set how
you prefer it. If the bug is there, the backlight will go "too dim" after
about a minute of no user input, sometimes going "too dim" the moment you
press a key. To get back to normal intensity, you must press the
"increase brightness" key. You will find this irritating!

I'm not sure how best to stop the bug. Try setting brightness to your
preferred level, then either restart or maybe wait 20 minutes for the
screensaver to lock-in the preferred level.

I previously observed the backlight going "too dim" when I put the power
plug in or out, but that is not happening now. So there might be more
than one bug with similar symptoms.
