Comment(by dilinger):

 The more memory that's available, the higher the chance of the 600kB (or
 so) contiguous memory that we need being available.  Still, I'm surprised
 that it was unable to find enough memory with 30MB free.. but then again,
 that's 30 out of 256MB..
