 Actually, we want to make the search icon on the keyboard immediately
 focus the Journal's search field.  I see the argument for quick Journal
 access, though.  Perhaps we do need a better way within the UI itself.

 There will be a daemon running in the background that will relaunch the
 Journal if it ever does crash.  This should not require interaction from
 the user.

 These are both true.  It also confuses the notion of invitations, as
 invitations will appear in this location as colored icons as well.  They
 would look identical to the Journal icon as you describe it.  I think if
 we do add a direct portal to the Journal it will come somewhere in the top
 of the frame, likely as a search field.  (Thick of something akin to
 quicksilver built into the frame.)
