Comment(by MitchellNCharity):

 Brainstorming some workarounds:
  - Filter out the movement. Both oddities seem events of higher-than-
 normal cursor acceleration and velocity. Perhaps sugar could watch cursor
 movement, and one occurs, reset the cursor position to where it began.
  - Allow the resistive pad to be used as a fallback. Map the resistive
 mouse pad to the entire screen, rather than just the top third. Either by
 3x stretching of the entire vertical mapping, or by symmetric 3x
 stretching of one of the three pad tiles. At least when the strageness is
 caused by water exposure, the resistive pad continues to work even when
 the capacitive pad has become completely unusable.
  - Allow the 8-way game pad to be used as a fallback. The 8-way pad might
 be used to steer the mouse around. Which would also be useful for surfing
 in ebook mode.

 The 8-way pad idea would be useful in itself. The others would at least
 allow the laptop to continue to be used, even when the capacitive pad
 packs up.
