 After investigating a bit more I've found that the problem occurs whether
 or not a subwindow is open when you switch to the donut (though for some
 reason I was pretty sure this wasn't the case originally). The following
 procedure will also reproduce the bug.

 1. Open paint.

 2. Return to the activity donut using the rolldown taskbar. There should
 be a gray circle icon added to the activity donut.

 3. Click on Paint in the donut. You will get a grey screen.

 4. Return to the activity donut.

 5. Click on the gray circle icon. This will return you to Paint properly.
