One of the mechanisms in X that has solved a set of UI problems seen in
Microsoft Windows is what is called a "grab". When something is grabbed,
the event is reported to the grabbing window even if you are outside of
that window.
Scrollbars are implemented as windows, and when the mouse button goes
down, the mouse gets grabbed, and even if the user happens to wander
outside the window, the events still get reported to that window. This is
why on X, scrollbars, once invoked, are actually reliable, rather than
failing if the user wanders away by accident.
Having recently played with Beryl, I would suggest rather than edges that
the corners invoke the frame. That still means that you can get to the
frame very easily, while only actually involving 4 pixels on the screen.
So, for example, in Beryl, I like the Expose' (since you are a mac addict)
like behavior that is invoked when you go to the corner. And it doesn't
happen accidentally anywhere nearly as often as is happening by using
edges.
