 You do both, just like how the human eye is protected.

 Radially, from inside (optical axis) to outside:

  1. lens surface, presumably curved
  1. a smoothly curved gutter for debris
  1. a protective ridge (the "brow")
  1. the "face" of the laptop

 The transition between face and brow should be sharp. This is so that
 something sliding along the face will catch on the edge rather than
 slipping right over the edge.

 The gutter is important. It is where debris initially goes when the lens
 is wiped clean. Without this, the debris would collect on the edge of the
 lens where it would mildly obstruct the lens and eventually move back onto
 the center of the lens.
