a battery is charged to the point it cannot report its status (it has a
tiny microcontroller in it) to the CPU, the most the machine can do is to
trickle charge the battery until that microcontroller is again sane,
before again charging at full speed.

I've taken the battery out for various lengths of time, between a couple
minutes to a few hours. I could leave it overnight if that helps.
At one point yesterday I think I had the battery completely drained; it
wouldn't even respond to the power button. This is after quite a bit of
playing around. When I first noticed the trouble yesterday morning the XO
had shut itself off, leaving the battery around 4% if I recall correctly.
That prior night it was powered on and plugged into the wall, but not
really doing anything.
Last night I left it charging. The indicator light is still orange, and
it's gaining about 2 or 3% per hour. Should I keep charging it all the
way up? (It's at 39% now, so another day and a half at this rate.) I could
discharge it all the way down again too. Something else?
