Comment:

This has been dormant for a while now. Here are the basic points
 discussed so far:

  1. Do nothing automatically when entering handheld mode, but allow the
activity to rotate if it desires.
  2. Return automatically to default orientation when leaving handheld mode
  3. Restore previously selected orientation (per instance/per activity?)
 when ''returning'' to handheld mode.
  4. Store a persistent rotation preference in the metadata for the
 instance or activity

We already handle (1) by doing nothing. I think we should really
implement (2) as soon as we get serious about handheld mode. (2), of
course, requires some form of (3). For simplicity, I propose to keep a
per instance variable (window property?) which tracks this while the
activity is running. I think we can ignore (4) completely.

Marco, I'm not really sure this is for you; we may need a dedicated
 handheld mode guy. Any ideas?
