 Maybe I didn't wait long enough.  If it slows it a lot, then I might have
 timed out.

 The camera activity must suspend itself when its no longer visible.  It is
 unacceptable for it to eat CPU and power/battery when not in use. You
 can't expect kids to remember to shut it down when not in use. The window
 system provides visibility events for exactly this reason.
