Kim,

That's the piece that everybody keeps missing.
When you have a scenario like John's, YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO RELY ON ANYTHING ELSE to get the laptops to talk with each other.

Zack,
Ok. I think you are missing one thing: One of the XOs has to be connected to an AP or with a USB-Ethernet dongle connected to your internal network. This XO will then provide a mesh network for the others.

 So try that, then see if you get a mesh circle in the neighborhood view. After that, the other XOs should be able to connect to that mesh network. If it doesn't work right away try rebooting the other XOs.

This is four XOs sitting in my cube in Westford, with no AP connection. 
Pure mesh, all the way. Except nobody can see each other. All are
running 494 with firmware 18.

Hmm... maybe there's something special about the school server...

Good to hear that APs work; haven't tried that yet.

I hope to try this once I can get the laptops to at least see each other
over the mesh.
