I guess the first comment would be that people who don't have problems tend not to write to these lists.

It also makes a difference how much you have to do to get ready to install the server, are you starting with a machine that already has a working version of Fedora 18, such as an XO 4, or do you need to install everything from scratch.

Our problems in Haiti started when the brand new, already installed and configured machine that we took there would not even boot after its ride in the airplane. A member of our team had to perform unnatural acts to get it to work. We literally started from scratch, even taking out the cpu chip and putting it back in.

This is not the normal situation, but it does make the point to get things working as well as you can before you take a machine to a place where power and networking are not as reliable as you may be used to.

In any event, you may take solace in the fact that it's probably easier than using BlackBoard :)

I am not a techie and these emails are scaring me to death. Is it advisable for a novice to try a server in a school that has XOs or should I just stick to using lone computers?

I know by default during the installation the fedora will part the whole harddisk into two parts, for root (/) 50G, and for /home the remaining. However, in XSCE's setting, the main content is put into /library which belongs to / partition.
