Yes, I posted about it here a while ago.
Mahara started within my team at Catalyst, about 2 years ago, as a
rebuild of Elgg based on the core code from Moodle, which was much
saner and known to scale. We had tried coercing Elgg into sanity, but
it wasn't going to happen. (I was initially against starting anew; I
was wrong :-) )
Being a new project, Mahara devs changed a few coding techniques in
ways that were a tad too risky for Moodle at the time. As the risks
paid off, Moodle has followed with similar changes for v2.0
I've been talking recently with Nigel and Penny about it. Once the
urgent is behind us... it's likely that Mahara is coming... It may not
be on the XS itself, but hosted at an ISP. Mahara hosting the online
version of your Journal can provide the "what after I finish school"
continuity.
