XO's can extend the reach of APs by being mesh portals themselves.
That has been the original plan from day 1.

Since AAs will only repeat mesh frames (in standalone) mode, they won't 
extend the reach of APs directly by themselves.

John just tested a $45 Access point b.t.w. with 80 XOs.

Interesting... Tell me more about this... would it work to have the XS
with a conventional AP on its LAN connection, and a couple of AAs
installed further away to extend the reach? Will that scale well? IOWs
how smart are the AAs in their behaviour as repeaters?
