Thanks for the questions, responses and references to extra resources,

To answer several questions brought up about the Kenya project

Funding

For volunteers going to Kenya in July - they pay for air and lodging and
$400 for administration and for visa, shots, and insurance. Flights from
Boston are around $2,000 - it will depend on where each eCorps volunteer
travels from.

The $22,330 does not relate to nor include the eCorps trip - but only the
container of computers that is going in February. (We would love to include
some more XO computers)

I will look into the suggested references at IEEE and see how they fit into
the following priorities. Right now, the priority is to first get the
laptops to Kenya, then get a training team, then develop ties to other
institutions.

OLPCs vs. other computers

(This was the answer offered by my professor; excuse it if it is a bit glib;
"I think one way to compare the two laptops is the drop them and see which
one survives.") I would love to learn about 'Sugar on a Stick" when I return
from a trip to Peru. I am looking forward to learning more. I am really a
novice with my XO.

Peru

Are there any questions or suggestions from your experiences that anyone
would like to draw from the Peru experience? Here is the link to a recent
report on implementation. Its quite interesting.

Thanks for any and all comments and suggestions. I could really use them,

Michael Hsu

Hello OLPC colleagues,

These projects sound very exciting. Best of luck in getting them off and
running.

One possible source of support could be the IEEE (Electrical & Computer
Engineering professional organization).

For example, the IEEE is currently sponsoring the following 125th year
anniversary challenge to student proposals:

 http://www.ieee125.org/change-the-world/index.html

Also, the young members' group "GOLD, the graduates of the last decade" is
working with Engineers without Borders (EWB-USA) to provide sponsorship for
projects under the IEEE Gold Humanitarian Fellowship.

Please let me know if you have questions on these topics or would like
further info.
Best Regards,

 Bruce Hecht

hi,

Will you be combining OLPC XOs with donated computers for the students or
just using XOs or just donated used computers. You might want to take a
look at the Sugar on a Stick project where we are working on making donated
computers run Sugar off of USB sticks so each student still has thier own
environment but they can use whatever computer is available.

Dear OLPC Boston,

My name is Michael Hsu and I am at the Kennedy School. I have met some of
your group at the MIT Museum but regretfully due to finals, was not able to
meet with more of you.

I am writing to inform you that my Professor, Calestous Juma, on the OLPC
board, has a project in Western Kenya. My understanding is that it will not
be completely OLPC but this may be an excellent way to compare the OLPC in a
development setting against traditional PC's.

Obviously, funding is crucial and any assistance on this end would be
appreciated, so please consider and spread the word for those who can
donate. Additionally, the project intends to organize a group of 10
volunteers to go to Kenya for four weeks from July 10th until August 7th.

(personal note: I went on 3 trips to Kenya and the entrepreneurial spirit
among the people I met is truly inspirational)
