Hi Caryl,

I go to school near there (usc) so I might be able to help. I'm done with classes, so my schedule is flexible, but working on dissertation does take up a lot of time . "sparing an afternoon once in a while " is doable , so if I can help let me know.

Thanks,

Abe

Ps, I think I met you at scale... I was volunteering at the ossie room. Sorry about the late start of your presentation!

Hello So Cal OSSIE enthusiasts,

Last month a group of you pitched in and helped make the OLPC/Sugar Labs booth at SCaLE 9X a success.  We had a lot of fun and I really appreciate all of you who were able to help.

Now, I have another fun volunteer opportunity for you.  This time we are asking for a longer term commitment from some of you who might be able to spare an afternoon once in a while to work on a project with some young teens, XOs and open source software. Here's the deal...

The FAMLI after school program at Audubon Middle School (located near Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Blvds) needs one or more volunteers to help once a week with an OLPC Contributors Program Project they have. The program meets at a secure location on campus and there is a safe area there to park your car.

The computer saavy person who started their Contributors Program project has moved out of the area and can no longer help out.  They have other volunteers who help with the wide variety of activities they have going on all week, but no one who can help the young people with computers.

Here is a link to information about FAMLI and some of the wonderful things they are doing with the young people in the program:

Perhaps a group of you could take this on as a joint project where we could schedule one or two volunteers to go on the same day once a week for a couple of hours between about 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm. You would be working with some of the students on an international group pen/pal exchange program, designed in the form of a newsletter exchange.

Students would plan their articles, take photos with their XOs, write articles, and put them together into a finished product that they would then put into a file and send via an email attachment to the other school.  We already have one other program in Uganda signed up to work with them, and I have contacts with others that may join in once it is started.

Here is a link to information about the program in Uganda that the students at Audubon would be corresponding with:

In addition, the volunteers would be helping students maintain the XOs with software updates and solving simple technical problems. There would be a scheduled time each week to work with them and the students would work independently on the other days.

If you are interested in knowing more about this and might like to get involved, please send me a reply to this message. If we get enough people to make it happen, I'll help you work out a schedule and will try to schedule myself to come in from Ventura county and participate in it too from time to time.

I hope some of you can join me in helping with this project!  This is a great group of young people and they will be a lot of fun to work with.

Caryl
