The very nature of open source is conducive to the promotion of higher
learning. For one thing open source
software is public domain (the development, use, and redistribution is
free). You don't have to buy royalties or
rely on Microsoft or Apple to get new version of an OS. There's so many ope=
n
resource software out there
that one can teach an entire university with materials from the web. It
opens up higher learning and Sugar is
a GREAT start because it is specifically designed for young children and th=
e
fundamentals are taught outright. For every software program that I could
think off, there's already a community of programmers working on a free
version.
But it goes beyond software. Richard Baraniuk (founder of Connexions) talks
about a free, open-source, global clearinghouse of course materials. :

Why not specifically state that we're with OLPC -main in the language of ou=
r
mission statement? Why not name
ourselves OLPC - Philippines? These are my take on this. A couple of
reasons:
a) It is short sighted. While our current vehicle of choice is XO wit=
h
Sugar, we don't want to be limited by both.
OLPC-Main is in constant flux. We hope for its longevity but we want
to be able to survive outside of it as well.
b) The group's vision needs to be broader and that is to be able to
provide and drive higher-learning through
constructivism and open source materials. OLPC is but a first step.
c) Changes in technology might provide better alternative to XO.
Lastly, "OLPC - Philippines " as a name was already rejected by
SEC-Philippines. As it is too close to OLBC - Philippines.
Having said that, there are so many ways an organization aligns themselves
with one without being tied to it (a great example is Waveplace). Our
biggest program will be through OLPC & Sugar there's no question about that=
.
What Ryan submitted are drafts and they can be changed. We can also have a
broader mission statement while stating the underlying tones of OLPC main i=
n
our vision statement.
"Could we possibly spread ourselves too thin by having a broad
mission/vision statement? Why not concentrate on OLPC first?" Even the most
vast organizations do not work on everything at once in the beginning. Of
course this is not realistic. Nor is it realistic to have a short vision in
a mission/statement when you expect the organization to survive decades dow=
n
the road, especially for a technology based organization like ours.

Hi All, <br><br>There are differences between promoting computer literacy a=
nd the promotion of <br>"open source learning", which is the recu=
rring theme for the language of the mission/vision statements. <br>From wha=
t I can glean from their websites, PBSP and Gilas they deal with the former=

mostly Windows machines. We can talk more about the differences in the meet=
ing.<br><br>The very nature of open source is conducive to the promotion of=
higher learning.=A0 For one thing open source<br>software is public domain=
(the development, use, and redistribution is free).=A0 You don't have =
to buy royalties or<br>
rely on Microsoft or Apple to get new version of an OS. There's so many=
open resource software out there<br>that one can teach an entire universit=
y with materials from the web. It opens up higher learning and Sugar is <br=

a GREAT start because it is specifically designed for young children and th=
e fundamentals are taught outright. For every software program that I could=
think off, there's already a community of programmers working on a fre=
e version.=A0 <br>
But it goes beyond software. Richard Baraniuk (founder of Connexions) talks=
about=A0 a free, open-source, global clearinghouse of course materials. : =

<br>Why not specifically state that we're with OLPC -main in the langua=
ge of our mission statement? Why not name <br>ourselves OLPC - Philippines?=
These are my take on this. A couple of reasons:<br><br>=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 a) =
It is short sighted. While our current vehicle of choice is XO with Sugar, =
we don't want to be limited by both. <br>
=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 OLPC-Main is in constant flux. We hope for its longevity bu=
t we want to be able to survive outside of it as well. <br>
<br>=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 b) The group's vision needs to be broader and that =
is to be able to provide and drive higher-learning through <br>=A0=A0=A0=A0=
=A0 constructivism and open source materials. OLPC is but a first step. <br=
><br>=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 c) Changes in technology might provide better alternat=
ive to XO. <br>
<br>Lastly, "OLPC - Philippines " as a name was already rejected =
by SEC-Philippines. As it is too close to OLBC - Philippines. <br><br>Havin=
g said that, there are so many ways an organization aligns themselves with =
one without being tied to it (a great example is Waveplace). Our biggest pr=
ogram will be through OLPC & Sugar there's no question about that. =
What Ryan submitted are drafts and they can be changed. We can also have a =
broader mission statement while stating the underlying tones of OLPC main i=
n our vision statement.=A0 <br>
<br>"Could we possibly spread ourselves too thin by having a broad mis=
sion/vision statement? Why not concentrate on OLPC first?" Even the mo=
st vast organizations do not work on everything at once in the beginning. O=
f course this is not realistic. Nor is it realistic to have a short vision =
in a mission/statement when you expect the organization to survive decades =
down the road, especially for a technology based organization like ours.<br=
