In Ubuntu, you don't even need to run it in a VM - you can use the
system itself to run Sugar UI as well as the activities. You just have
to download some packages from the universe repositories:

 $ sudo aptitude install sugar sugar-activities sugar-emulator

There's also some PPAs involved with much updated packages.
