[OLPC-Philippines] Pilot Software and Content

Charles Chen ideasman88 at yahoo.com.au

Hi Everybody,

I will not be available for our meeting on the 18 October.

However, I will need your help in the school pilot I am organising, namely:

1. Identifying the best software to use to run the XO;
2. Identifying a suitable content to teach learning English for a Grade IV level class.

The proposed pilot will seek to use the OLPC XO as a teaching aid in learning English. The curriculum will still be based on the existing one approved by DepED.

Thanks.

Charles

He (Stallman) also wrote this:

"Proprietary software keeps users divided and helpless. Its
functioning is secret, so it is incompatible with the spirit of
learning. Teaching children to use a proprietary (non-free) system
such as Windows does not make the world a better place, because it
puts them under the power of the system's developer -- perhaps
permanently. You might as well introduce the children to an addictive
drug. If the XO turns out to be a platform for spreading the use of
proprietary software, its overall effect on the world will be
negative."

Stallman is likening Windows to a drug? This was discussed before. I'd
rather not elaborate. I used to contribute to the FSF as a sustaining
member but how things are going lately, with Stallman at the
forefront, and raiding Apple Stores, etc. they've become
fundamentalists looking to cull the infidels.

Sugar as a learning platform should not be locked to this
fundamentalist mindset. Sugar ported to Windows is a win for learning,
expands learning opportunities, reaches a bigger audience. But this is
not the ultimate goal of Sugar (porting).

Ganito.

Si Melch di pa masyado versed sa Linux.

On Oct. 13, lalabas na dapat yung OS build 8.2.0 final which is the
one they'll be shipping with the upcoming Nov.17 Give 1 Get 1 OLPC
program.

Can you USB-clean install Michaelangelo with 8.2.0 final when it comes
out, install the newer G1G1 activity pack (I think they'll update it
for 8.2.0), then install Opera 9.60, Flash 10 RC, and Midnight
commander for Melch?

Also, can you try and help figure out how to install

(convenient naman kay Melch from his YM).

I'll update the Opera page sa olpc wiki to reflect the newly release
version 9.60 rpms.

Melch, oks, meetup na lang kayo ni Jerome. Hintayin mo na lang na
ilabas ng OLPC team yung bagong OS build which should be soon.

It's already in 767candidate when the final build comes out, he can
just use olpc-update from the Terminal activity. The G1G1v2 is already
included on the current machine, but if he can wait I can put it on a
clean slate when 8.2.0 is released.

I'll check it this weekend. Usually gstreamer-plugins-ugly contains
codecs that are either 1) proprietary or 2) not exactly ready for
primetime.

Anytime next week, I am in Ortigas. Sorry won't be working from home
for quite a while so Ortigas would be the most convenient place to
meet up.

Hi Guys,

Great to see all the activity in the Philippines list!

I would love to see an RPG! We need more fun.

One note on Flash, its hard to collect all the Flash threads but I
believe that Flash 10 is running a little better on the XO. We still
have a challenge with Flash acceleration not working well with out AMD
Geode chip. This results in slow performance for Flash, even when using
the most compatible version. Let me know if you get different results.

I believe someone has pushed AMD and Adobe to talk about that and I'm
hoping Adobe will fix it soon, but I don't have the details.

On Joyrdie and releases, that is correct that Joyride is the
"development" branch. It contains the latest and greatest but maybe
broken too.

More information on Releases and where to get them is at:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Releases
with past releases listed under the release notes link:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Release_notes

We're about to post the next major release, 8.2.0 as early as next week.
You can get a signed version of that by following instructions here:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Friends_in_testing

I suggest that you do any activity or new development with that version.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more info. I'm not that
expert in activity packaging and game development but I can connect you
to people who are have any questions.

Thanks,

Greg Smith
OLPC Product Manager

PS I think I picked up a little tagalog: Pa-test naman = great news?

PPS Naz, you're making a great impact on the devel list. Keep it up!

I'm willing to wait for the new build :) Thanks!

@ Greg: Nice to hear from you :) I'd love to see an RPG on the XO too, so
I hope this works out well, hehe.
