Hi Nadia and all!
I am Jean and I would like to help for resolving the problem of duty custom.
I was posting to have the packing list. I met the HAT yesterday (Haute Autorité de la transtion : Presidency of Republic).
It was my first meeting with the official of the Presidency office and , moreover, I did not have the packing list.
Do you think having the packing list reference can facilitate to resolve the problem of custom duty?
Thanks
Jean

Hello all,
First, let me congratulate you for all your efforts to bridge the digital gap with the XO computers for the kids!

Second, I'd like to help the best I can and would appreciate if the persons copied with this email can identify themselves and tell us what steps have been taken by the Canadian NGO before the shipment (also, which department or division of the customs or Ministry of Finance have they applied for tax exemptions please?)

Thank you again for the good work!
Lila A.

Subject: Customs duty

Hello Joseline and Lila
I am hoping that we can find a way to solve this customs problem before we
attempt more deployments of XO computers to Madagascar.  It is very
discouraging that the government is willing to hold the generosity of
foreigners hostage.
If we brainstorm and include everyone in our emails maybe someone will
help us.
Lila- the Canadian NGO- MadagascarSchoolProject- is supporting a
deployment of 100 XO computers along with students from
 George
 Washington
University and University of Maryland.  They built a school last year in
Ambatoharanana, Madagascar.  The students have arrived in the village  but
the computers are being held by customs in Tana.  They are demanding $6500
in duty!  These computers are a donation and are to go a school.  They are
not for re-sale.  If you can think of a way to help we would be very
grateful.
Joseline- Lila is with the Madagascar Mission to the United Nations in New
York.  I spoke with her on the phone and explained the customs problems.
Lets hope she can help us.
Cheers
June Kleider
