Hello Bill,

You might want to check out Freegeek Chicago
(http://freegeekchicago.org/). They give people who can't afford a
computer a chance to earn one by volunteering their time recycling
older computers. I think they also sell them for about $50 each. It
is a great non-for-profit organization.

You might also want to check out Raspberry Pi
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi). It is basically
"complete" Linux system on a single chip. The cost is extremely
inexpensive. However, there is no input, output or case, so you would
have to factor that into your final budget.

You should also check out Pumping Station: One
(http://pumpingstationone.org/). PS1 is basically a hackerspace and
they are tinkering with all kinds of things. Somebody there can
probably point you in the right direction. They have a public mailing
list and a weekly open house.

I know a guy who is involved in building hardware. I'll forward your
e-mail to him and I guess he will contact you if he is interested.

Best of luck!,
eviljoel
