Good question.

Yes, certainly.  I was expecting the firmware update person to be
plugging it in to a flying lead for that step.

The firmware update won't proceed if the battery is low.  (Or missing,
or not being backed by external power).

So that's a good reason to fix any battery state of charge problem early
in the proceedings.
