[Nepal] speed of joyride builds?

Things seem quite slowish to me, but I didn't do any benchmarking.
I might attribute it to memory leaks, because it tends to become
slower over time.

Also, Xorg seems slower than before, which is not what  I would
expect after all the optimization work that has gone into X 1.5.
There's probably some configuration or tuning issue we've missed.
