I filed a bug on the Pootle Bugzilla 
(http://bugs.locamotion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=390) - there is someone who 
is working on Pootle for Google Summer of Code (Sayamindu Dasgupta is 
mentoring him) so there's a good chance that this will be improved in 
the next few months.

I encourage you to file any other bugs (e.g. "quite a mess") especially 
if you can reproduce them and provide screenshots so it is clear what 
the problem really is.
