If the child is already familiar with that symbol (e.g. a mathematical one) it's
ok. But imagine a child who opens up TurtleArt for the first time and has no
idea about functions, operators and conditions. More descriptive text is needed
in that case. And hover will not solve the problem because kids easy lose interest.
