Hi Mika,
Maja and I are still working on converting 'where there is no doctor'
to HTML. If you want to help with that:
We're working on the Spanish edition: http://www.hesperian.org/publications_download_dnhd.php
and are making some progress. We have created XHTML documents from
the InDesign documents we received, that is slow, chapter by chapter
work. We're a couple of chapters in.
Two tasks of that project could use immediate help:
1. InDesign doesn't export any table-like structures correctly, for
example, look at page 6 of http://www.hesperian.info/assets/donde_2007/donde_ch01.pdf
These tables need to be manually edited into the XHTML output. If
you can create XHTML, creating a bunch of those tables would be a big
help. The images used in these tables may need to be manually
converted too (most other images are done automatically).
2. The XHTML output misplaces all the images, they need to be moved to
the right location in the XHTML and tagged with a correct width= tag.
A script I wrote will take all width= tags and automatically converts
the TIFF images to the right dimensions for the XO.
And then there a number of other things which still need to be
addressed, when most of the conversion work is done:
1. A global index for the HTML chapter files (the home page for the
book)
2. I need someone Spanish to create pretty labels for all the 'see p
150' references. In HTML it is not 'page 150', but more 'chapter 10,
what to do with nasty cuts', etc.
Alternatively, you could pick up one of the other Hesperian books and
convert that to XHTML on your own. They have a number of other books
which would be really great to have on the XO. (For example, the
english edition of Where there is no Doctor)
After Maja and I are done with 'Donde hay ...', we're likely to also
do the english edition (but not before aug-2008). The other books will
have to be worked on by other people. After that, we'd like to create/
adapt content which is more aimed at the XO age group itself, really
basic human/mammalian physiology, for example.
If you want access to the InDesign documents, ask Anna or me and we'll
send you a private link. I promised Hesperian to not freely distribute
those.
Regards,
- Pascal.
