There is a problem with WPA on Build 650 (Please see
http://www.laptop.org/en/laptop/start/connecting.shtml), so if that is
what you were trying to use, it would not have worked. As Marc
suggests, please start with an open network just to make sure things
are working. Also, please update to a more recent build, one that
supports WPA (You can force the update from the terminal activity.

Regarding the problems with the one laptop, could you please be more specific?
