Hi Marc,

You might need the fonts to be installed. Download
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/pub/Linux/distributions/fedora/linux/releases/8/Everything/ppc/os/Packages/lohit-fonts-hindi-2.1.5-3.fc8.noarch.rpm
and install the RPM with the command

rpm -ivh lohit-fonts-hindi-2.1.5-3.fc8.noarch.rpm

Newer builds (Update1 693 for instance) has the font in them.
