[Health] Introductions to Health Digest

Hi All,
My name is Dari AlHuwail and I am a Systems Engineer at Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait. I am currently in Boston training with Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians's Division of Clinical Informatics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) until the 20th of August. I have been one of the early adopters of OLPC and have been trying to get it to accompany myself and a group of others to Kenya as part of a volunteer initiative named Kuwait for Kenya (K4K). I have been involved with groups like Students for International Change (now Support for International Change) where we taught about HIV/AIDS in rural villages of Tanzania.
I am an IT professional by degree and am very interested in health informatics and applications we can deploy on such platform. I am willing to help out in whatever capacity. I can be reached via email or cell phone in Boston on 617-383-1043.

Hi Team, 

Glad to see Beth re-invigorated the list!
I have been supporting OLPC content and peripheral development on and off the last few years. Two years ago, a former Medtronic colleague and I built up two inexpensive peripherals to explore biofeedback on the XO and to demonstrate its versatility as a potential healthcare platform. We held a few demonstrations on the West Coast within middle schools and deployed a few peripherals to pilot programs in Europe. We also developed a lesson plan with local teachers that could be distributed
 to other instructors without formal knowledge of biology or health. However, we haven't seen much momentum or interest in carrying this to a large scale health education project -- this mostly due to the burdensome additional cost of peripherals. 

I will be taking a hiatus from OLPC support very soon to start business school, but have been working with Ismael Schinca at Plan Ceibal (OLPC Uruguay) on one last deployment. We could use a few extra hands to work on either localization or enhancement of the UI to our activity. (@Stephen Thomas, interested in helping?)

@ismael, feel free to chime in on your vision of OLPC Health in your Uruguay implementation.

@Sameer, glad to see you're still interested in sensor activities on the XO. Sorry, we never got to meet up in SF.

Hello All-

My name is Jacquie Stone and I am brand new to this email list. I went to

college with Beth Santos, and she talked to me about how you are all looking

to develop a public health curriculum for this program.

I completed my Master's in Public Health this past spring at Boston

University, with a concentration in epidemiology and international health.

Both before and during my degree, I worked for the Clinton Foundation

HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI). During my 4 years there I had the opportunity to

live and work for them in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Nigeria and Boston. During

that time, and while in school, my focus narrowed to childhood malnutrition,

with particular emphasis on the epidemiology of the condition, developing

trainings for diagnosis and treatment of malnutrition, and designing

monitoring and evaluation systems for programs aiming to address childhood

malnutrition.

In January, I left CHAI to work for Management Sciences for Health, a non

profit public health consulting firm based in Boston. Just recently, I

finished a contract consultancy with them and I am now looking for

additional consulting work, paid or pro bono.

I've just moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina to live with my (newlywed)

husband, who is a Marine stationed here. As luck would have it, Beth is

moving to my neighborhood as well and we had the chance to meet in person

this past weekend to talk about the future of this public health curriculum.

Given my background and interests, I'd be most inclined (and enthused!) to

partner with anyone who is interested in working on a malnutrition unit.
