Wade,

The trouble with an approach like that is that you really need to be  
careful with project dependencies. Your interface coder may have  
certain dependencies on the model coder, the support artist and  
possibly others, since you will not be able to completely abstract the  
different sections of the collaborative project.

	It all comes down to the bus factor: what if your model coder gets  
hit by a bus? If the interface coder needs the work of the model coder  
to proceed, he/she will be stuck. This is a situation you should  
probably try to avoid. Within a larger, established community such an  
idea has a larger chance of succeeding, but within the Summer of Code  
you could run into problems with it. I think Google discourages this  
sort of group work for just this reason, although they definitely  
support collaboration between separate projects.
