  The LANG environment variable contains the language being used: for
  example, "en_US.UTF-8".  This should be used to determine the language
  used by default by Squeak/etoys, rather than having to go find some
  strange menu to change languages, which is clumsy in the extreme (and
  really hard to do if you don't understand English in the first place).
